Betsy Kehoe likes to stop by Halliday’s Arabian Date Gardens, an oasis of kitsch on the outskirts of an old desert resort in Southern California. But today, the young social worker doesn’t get to drink her morning date shake. Sonia, the waitress who usually makes it, was stabbed in a grove of date palms the night before. The cop in charge of the murder case is Detective Jimmy (Fitz) Fitzpatrick, who disappeared from Betsy’s life after a passionate night together. Now Betsy, a recently transplanted—and widowed--New Yorker, has even more reasons to despise the handsome detective. He suspects her favorite client, Godfrey Tuttle, a retired Broadway vocal coach. And her friend, Max Green, who owns the local gay community’s favorite Mid-Century modern bar. And worst of all, Tessa, a zookeeper who just happens to be Betsy’s younger sister.

Mystery novel, 90,000 words.

I could almost smell the grapefruit blossoms as I inhaled this delectable mystery, with its vivid characters, sly wit and deep affection for the old resorts of Southern California.
